Keep in mind that your baby isn’t the only one who’s missing you. We know that your mate has loved having you at home for a week or two, and now that she has a baby to care for, she’ll probably miss you more than ever. If she can’t get out much with friends or coworkers, she is probably craving adult interaction. Send her a text or two from work each day, or keep in touch over the phone. Make up for your time away by reconnecting during the evenings and weekends (we’ll tell you how in chapter 23).
Try not to let too many chores eat up your home time. Take inventory of all the things you do around the house every week. For example, do you spend four hours every Saturday mowing the lawn and doing the gardening, or washing and polishing the cars? You may have always enjoyed these physical routines, or perhaps you are looking for an excuse to get out of them. Either way, realize that your time at home has become more valuable. Consider hiring a gardener to keep up the lawn or a neighborhood kid to wash the cars. Delegate whatever time-consuming tasks you can so you can make the most of your time at home. Also, try to set aside any hobbies or other distractions for a couple of months so you can focus on your family each evening and weekend.
You will soon find that there isn’t enough time in the day to be a full-time worker, full-time dad, and full-time husband as well, just as Mom is finding that the same is true for her roles. How do you balance it all? We have no idea. We still don’t have it all figured out. But we manage to do a pretty good job of balancing our marriages, careers, and fatherhood in a way that makes each role fulfilling for all involved.
